Hondillo neighborhood. Old Town

The complex is made up of narrow streets, squares and “tinaos”, with houses of between two and three floors that are structured in a West-East direction around the Hondillo or Castejón streets. It still preserves the morphology, as well as a large number of houses of ancient origin, at least in their basic structure, since the external appearance appears in many cases modified in the roofs, facades and carpentry. Particularly noteworthy are the “tinaos” and portals, such as La Chispas, Tío Pedro, Chirinas, Dieguito alley and Placeta Colorá. In addition, it houses some religious niches in the facades.
Historical aspects
Its existence is already mentioned in the Muslim era, forming part of one of the three neighborhoods that the town consisted of, called “del Aceituno”. There are various speculations about its Muslim and even Jewish origins, however, it is also known that during the Alpujarras War the town was razed, which could lead one to think that the remains that remain today belong to constructions made by the Christian settlers, although preserving the old structures and typologies. In any case, we are waiting for new publications that shed light on this matter. What is confirmed is that it was the main street and part of the royal road to the Alpujarra and Granada, which is still confirmed by some marks of cart wheels on the walls of the narrowest areas.
It is, along with the castle fortress, one of the most evident vestiges of the memory of the medieval period in this municipality. In the neighbourhood you can still see the typical elements of an architecture that seems to have Berber roots, with narrow streets, sheds, houses that support each other and step on each other, etc…
Location
It is located in the urban centre of Lanjarón, at its eastern end. Its main entrance is via the Plaza de la Constitución.
